The Council of Europe is an international organization whose main purpose is to achieve social and economical progress to its 47 Members Estates. It was created in 1949 with only 10 members.

It is not part of the European Unity in fact they are quiet different and probably, the most outstanding difference is that the UN can make common laws while it only promotes team work in order to solve the problems Europe is facing. The Council works in aspects like: public heath, protection of the environment, sports, human rights, economic and social progress, democracy development, etc.

According to its official website, its main objectives are:

• “To protect human rights, pluralist democracy and the rule of law.
• To promote awareness and encourage the development of Europe's cultural identity and diversity.
• To find common solutions to the challenges facing European society.
• To consolidate democratic stability in Europe by backing political, legislative and constitutional reform”.

The main organs of the Council of Europe are:

The Committee of Ministers; they take the biggest decisions as the budget, policies and activities. It is represented by the foreign Ministers of each Member States.

The Parliamentary Assembly; whose members are chosen by the Committee of Ministers.

The Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of Europe; its function is to improve services and democratic institutions.

The European Court of Human Rights; it guarantees the respect of European people’s rights.

The Secretariat; placed in the building in Strasbourg, France, more than 2000 people work there.
